Interesting Quotes:

"In the last 4-5 years, parvovirus in the US has been the biggest problem for kennels, even in vaccinated dogs."
(Foster-Smith Pet
Catalog, Vol. 03-57)

***

"She was a seven-month-old, gorgeous, taupe-colored devil in dogs clothing. But I loved her."
(Paul Loeb)

***

"The diet of our companion animals is deplorable. So many dogs and cats eat out of bags full of poor ingredients, rancid fats and powerful preservatives."
(Don Hamilton, DVM
from Homeopathic Care for Cats and Dogs)

***

Command; he thee obeys most readily.
Strike him; he whines and falls down at thy feet.
Call him; he leaves his game and comes to thee
With wagging tail,
offering his service meek.

If so thou wilt, a collar he will wear;
And when thou wish to take it off again,
Unto thy feet he crouchest down most fair,
As if thy will were all his good and gain.
(J. Molle)

***

"The more confidence you have in your dog, the more he will believe in you."
(From: Smarter Than You Think, by Paul Loeb)

***

"The housebound dog leads a stressed existence. It cannot express its natural behaviors: stalking, chasing, exploring, investigating."
(From: The Dog's Mind, by Bruce Fogle)

He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog;
You are his life, his love, his leader.
He will be yours, faithful and true
To the last beat of his heart.
You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.

"Skaya" to the rescue

Young "Skaya" says, 'I could race a Greyhound!"
"Skaya" thinks she's the fastest puppy alive
(Luka, 15 months old chasing her little 5-month-old sis)
The Caucasian Ovtcharka is a very powerful, athletic dog!

"Soyuznik," 30" tall at the shoulder

As you probably know, the Caucasian Ovcharka (loosely translated from Russian as Caucasian Sheepdog or Shepherd's dog), is a large and moderately aggressive dog who will need at least a minimum of obedience training and socializing to produce a happy and secure member of the family.  Caucasians are happy to follow your lead when you establish your position as "pack leader" (your Caucasian Ovtcharka will most likely be second in command).  All puppies are sweet, but this breed seems to stay that way even as they grow up - at least in our experience.  But of course when it comes to doing their "job," they are all business:  protecting property, family and livestock from predators and unwanted strangers.

"Czara"

In our family, Czara is the ruler over all the other critters on the ranch, be it dogs, kitties, chickens, horses, cattle or sheep.  She eats slowly because no critter comes near her dish, or they will get the 'Caucasian Stare,' although I can put my hands in her dish at any time.

She is patient and consistent, but will lay down the law if necessary, and none of the other ranch animals ever questions her authority - I wish I could train that well!  At the same time all the dogs worship the ground I walk on and obey without question (well, except maybe "Blue," our blue heeler, who is a dog of a different color).

"Luka" 8-1/2 months old

Rudi is a big bouncing sweetie.  He has a massive head and huge teeth and he loves to be loved, but as I'm hugging him, I find myself in awe of his power - I definitely wouldn't want to be on his bad side!

The Caucasian Ovtcharka to the rescue !!
("Soyuznik")

Certainly a person who buys a Caucasian Ovcharka should be an experienced dog owner, but in my experience, I find that they are easier to get a long with than Rottweilers or Dobermans - though obedience training is a must (have you ever noticed how obedience training will bond you with your dog?).  Socialization is also imperative; car rides, experiencing city noises and traffic, and exposure to many different situations will help make them a well-rounded dog.

Snow puppies on the JR Bar Ranch
Five thousand acres is a small operation in this part of the country, but is still
"as far as the eye can see."
All of our dogs (or in the case of puppies, will be) working dogs on a working cattle/horse ranch,
with literally miles and miles of territory to patrol

Essentially, the Caucasian Ovtcharka is a go-anywhere, do-anything type of dog.  They will enjoy a quiet stroll down a country land as well as a vigorous hike in the mountains.  They are always ready to jump in the truck and go (rest assured - with a Caucasian Ovcharka, your vehicle will be well guarded!).  Caucasians also love water and are very strong swimmers that can handle all kinds of weather, from the 105 degrees we have here in the summer to the occasional 30 degrees below zero we get in the winter!
